Lifelong Learning Programme – Leonardo Da Vinci – TOI Transfer of Innovation

MTRANSITION:

The mTransition project provided a free open source mobile app and Moodle based learning management system to support vocational education and training (VET) learners. The project built on the success of the mCommunity project, which developed an app to allow learners to view, update and receive progress reports against targets set in personal learning plans. The app also enables tutors to communicate directly with learners; define individual learning paths; set targets; monitor learners’ progress and attainment; and record non-formal learning experiences.

The aim of the two year project was to adapt and pilot the mCommunity app in three VET learning contexts targeting learners at risk of becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training), migrant VET learners seeking to overcome barriers of language and integration, and mobility learners completing part of their formal or informal training programme abroad. Tutors worked alongside learners to monitor progress towards agreed targets and offer additional online resources and support via the app’s instant messaging facility.

By giving learners the opportunity to define their individual learning plan and to monitor and document progress against agreed targets through the use of mobile technology, VET providers could enrich the training provision, increase engagement, and facilitate cooperation between VET providers, learners and companies. Furthermore, the convenience of being able to communicate with a tutor anytime, anyplace, means that learners are more likely to remain focussed and motivated to complete their studies.
